Sharepoint Services

SharePoint Services promotes collaboration within companies and with external parties. Files and information can be stored, shared and managed together. In our article “What is Microsoft SharePoint Services?” we tell you how SharePoint came about, what advantages it offers and how you can use Microsoft SharePoint for yourself.

The development of SharePoint Services

The development of SharePoint started in 1996 under Jeff Teper . At that time, his team was supposed to combine the topics “search, documents, office and web” in one solution. In the development phase, the two predecessor products “Office Server” and “Tahoe” were combined under the code name Tahoe. Today, Tahoe has evolved into the well-known SharePoint Server or SharePoint Online under Microsoft 365.

What is the SharePoint Services?

But what exactly does it mean when you bring “search, documents, office and web” together on one platform. What is the goal of this system and what do I achieve with it?

SharePoint uses web and network technologies to create websites for internal use and is therefore also a bit of a content management system (CMS). It is also used for secure storage, structuring, management and release or access to documents and is therefore also document and file management supplemented by an authorization system. Files and documents can be accessed from almost all types of devices. From all devices that can connect to SharePoint via a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) via the Internet or network and that have access to the individual areas in the system.

Of course, the SharePoint as a system also offers an extensive search function, which in the current versions even makes it possible to search not only for files or documents themselves, but also for content within documents, i.e. for individual words, expressions or entire passages.

What advantages does SharePoint offer?

What does such a platform offer the employees of an organization. With SharePoint Online you can create, store and share content on the web, no matter where you are. You can create intranet sites, pages, document libraries, and lists to share information across your organization.

You can then add so-called web parts such as text, images and documents to format and customize your content. You can present key visuals, news, and updates in a modern layout on communication sites, or you can connect all the right people for a project through team sites.

This is where a tool from Microsoft, which we already know, is added, which once again significantly expands the possibilities of SharePoint. In connection with Microsoft Teams , which uses SharePoint as the technical basis, there are even more extensive possibilities. But these and teams should not be the focus here for the time being.

In SharePoint you discover, follow and search for websites, files and people. B. This is how you manage your daily routine tasks with workflows, forms, lists and libraries.

The OneDrive client syncs and stores your files with the cloud so everyone can collaborate with you securely. Sharing individual files, folders or document libraries is also child’s play.

For a website-based collaboration platform, SharePoint Online is easy to maintain and the basics are easy for users to understand. SharePoint Online is also almost unlimitedly customizable and highly scalable. It can also be expanded to include special functions using a number of useful third-party solutions. This results in many different ways in which companies can use the platform to realize increased productivity.

The classic SharePoint on-premise server will certainly remain with us for a few years to come – at least this is confirmed by Microsoft again and again. However, it is also evident that today SharePoint innovations are first implemented online in SharePoint. This is because modern web technologies offer greater scope than the rather limited options of on-premise servers. The integration of SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365 is of course much more flexible and deeper, so that there is significantly more potential in the online version.
